THE MYTH OF BAIA

The history of Baia was shaped by volcanic activity. Magma rising from inside the earth caused the earth‘s crust to collapse and created the so-called Calderas, the Phlegraean Fields.
The geographical location of Baia was strategically important. The port of Puteoli – today Pozzuoli – was a major hub of trade between Rome, and the southern Mediterranean and Far Eastern provinces.
To the west, Baia was secured by the military port of Misenum. This was where the most powerful and largest fleet of the Roman Empire was located.
