The Vesuvius Funicular was opened on 1st June 1880. The overall cost was 435,000 liras.
The Funicular would carry 300 travelers a day on average. The distance covered was about 800m. To make the trip more comfortable, a coffee-shop, a restaurant, a stable and  a telegraph station were built along the track.
