During the last 15 years, geoarchaeological investigations associatedwith the construction of the new Naples subway in Italy have shednew light on the presence and configuration of the Greco-Roman harbor and its surroundings in an excavation area of more than 40,000m2.
This study offered the possibility to collect large amounts of stratigraphic and biosedimentological data, which have significantlyimproved our knowledge about the history of the Greco-Roman townand the evolution of its coastal landscape.
Archaeological excavations have unearthed the harbor basin of Parthenope-Neapolis, furnishing scientists with the opportunity to recover abundant archaeological remains and a thick succession of diverse infill sediments.
