CONTESTED URBAN BODIES

The Production of Liberated Spaces in the Tourist City of Naples, offer insights and analyses based on grainy, qualitative, ethnographic (partici-pant-observer) research. About urban movements in key Italian city marked by contemporary socio-political challenges.

This study encompasses 12 places that have identi-fied, at some point, as liberated spaces (Spazi Liberati) regardless of their legal status. The particular liberated spaces explored in this work are components of the Napoli Network of Beni Comuni (‘beni comuni’ is the Italian term for ‘commons’).

The focal case studies are in, or nearby, the central tourist district—l’Asilo, Santa Fede Liberata and Scugnizzo Liberato.
